Ingrid Laubrock’s Purposing The Air: A Poetic and Musical Journey Through Emotion

Releasing April 11, 2025 on Pyroclastic Records – A Boundary-Defying Double Album

Innovative composer and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock returns with an ambitious and groundbreaking project, Purposing The Air, set for release on April 11, 2025, via Pyroclastic Records. This double album, inspired by the poetry of Erica Hunt, explores the intimate connection between language and sound through a collection of 60 brief but evocative koans. Laubrock’s creative genius shines as she curates four vocal-instrumental duos that breathe life into Hunt’s words, each pairing offering a unique interpretation of the poet’s poignant themes.

A Unique Collaboration Between Music and Poetry

Purposing The Air features Laubrock’s deep engagement with the voice, following her earlier work Contemporary Chaos Practices (2018), which blended orchestra and choir. However, this project marks a more intimate approach, blending her distinctive saxophone compositions with the powerful poetry of Erica Hunt. The centerpiece of the album is Hunt’s “Mood Librarian – a poem in koan,” a thought-provoking work made up of short, often cryptic lines that evoke a vast spectrum of emotions and moods.

Laubrock’s decision to work with living poets stems from her dedication to contemporary compositions. After meeting Hunt at a mutual friend’s home, Laubrock felt an immediate connection and decided to set Hunt’s words to music, forging a new path that integrated poetry with her expansive musical style.

The Duos: Masterful Pairings of Voice and Instrument

The album showcases the versatility of Laubrock’s compositions, brought to life by four exceptional duos, each carefully chosen for their chemistry and ability to bring the poems to life:

  1. Fay Victor and Mariel Roberts – A new pairing of vocalist Fay Victor and cellist Mariel Roberts, whose collaboration brings a fresh depth to the compositions.

  2. Sara Serpa and Matt Mitchell – The dynamic duo of vocalist Sara Serpa and pianist Matt Mitchell, whose intimate musical rapport highlights the emotional nuances of the koans.

  3. Theo Bleckmann and Ben Monder – Veteran collaborators Theo Bleckmann (vocals) and Ben Monder (guitar), whose extensive history together creates a seamless, sophisticated interplay.

  4. Rachel Calloway and Ari Streisfeld (Duo Cortona) – Mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway and violinist Ari Streisfeld, known for their intricate performances as Duo Cortona, bring an unmistakable intimacy to the project.

Each duo interprets a unique selection of Hunt’s poetic fragments, allowing Laubrock’s compositions to breathe through a variety of voices and instrumental textures. By tailoring each koan to the distinct sound of the duo, Laubrock explores the intricate balance between structure and improvisation, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary music.

Laubrock’s Approach: A Fusion of Emotion and Innovation

As an experimental saxophonist and composer, Ingrid Laubrock has long been celebrated for her boundary-pushing musical explorations. Known for her work with luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jason Moran, and Myra Melford, Laubrock’s approach to Purposing The Air marks a new phase in her career. Writing for duos without the opportunity to direct the music from the inside was a unique challenge, as Laubrock explains: “You have to be more concise in what you write and construct. Writing for these duos was all about trying to find ways of letting two musicians interact and figuring out the possibilities of their instruments while still allowing my personal creativity to shine through.”

The title Purposing The Air is drawn from the lyric of the penultimate piece, performed by Duo Cortona: “birds purpose the air / as you purpose / pen and paper.” This metaphor suggests the delicate process of composition—transforming written notes into vibrations that resonate in the air, carrying meaning and emotion. Laubrock imagines the album as a space where Hunt’s poems float freely, with just enough space between each piece to allow for reflection before the next poetic moment arrives.

A Deep Dive into Poetic Music

Laubrock’s mastery lies in how she balances compositional rigor with the freedom of improvisation, giving each duo the space to infuse their personal style into the pieces while remaining true to the emotional core of Hunt’s work. The 60 koans, each a brief yet profound exploration of human experience, are as elusive and specific as the music that accompanies them, creating a powerful emotional resonance for the listener.

As Laubrock explains, “The texts of the poem are open and concise, often cryptic, but still poignant and relatable. Some I connected with immediately and viscerally, while others were more like evocative images or fun impressions. They really lend themselves to the song form in my mind.”

Ingrid Laubrock: A Visionary of Contemporary Music

Ingrid Laubrock’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz and contemporary composition has earned her accolades from some of the most respected voices in the music world. Described by The New Yorker as a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary,” Laubrock has spent years creating innovative, genre-defying works. Purposing The Air is another testament to her unique ability to combine complex soundscapes with deeply human emotion, making it an album that resonates across multiple musical and cultural realms.

Pre-Order Purposing The Air Today

Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind musical journey through the evocative poetry of Erica Hunt, curated and composed by Ingrid Laubrock. Purposing The Air is available for pre-order now and will be released on April 11, 2025. Bennie Maupin’s The Jewel in the Lotus: A Timeless Masterpiece of Modern Jazz

Coming May 16, 2025 – A Classic from 1974 Reissued by ECM

Prepare to rediscover a hidden gem of modern jazz with the upcoming reissue of Bennie Maupin’s The Jewel in the Lotus, set for release on May 16, 2025, through ECM Records. Originally recorded in 1974, this album is a remarkable testament to the creativity and musical ingenuity that defined the era. Featuring an ensemble of stellar musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, and more, The Jewel in the Lotus has long been considered an unsung classic, and now, it's set to captivate a new generation of listeners.

A Brilliant Convergence of Jazz Legends

Bennie Maupin, a master saxophonist and reed player, has made significant contributions to some of jazz’s most iconic albums, including Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi and Headhunters, and Marion Brown’s Afternoon of a Georgia Faun. However, Maupin’s own solo work has been sparse, making The Jewel in the Lotus even more special. Released initially as ECM 1042, the album stands out as a milestone in Maupin’s career, showcasing his inventive approach to jazz.

On this album, Maupin is joined by a who’s-who of jazz innovators:

  • Herbie Hancock (piano, electric piano)

  • Buster Williams (bass)

  • Frederick Waits (drums, marimba)

  • Billy Hart (drums)

  • Bill Summers (percussion)

  • Charles Sullivan (trumpet)

This dynamic ensemble, drawn from Hancock’s inner circle during the 1970s, creates a uniquely cohesive sound that blends the influences of avant-garde jazz, modal improvisation, and complex rhythmic structures. Each player contributes to the overall tapestry, creating an album that feels like a collective expression of artistic vision.

The Sound of Selflessness: A Masterpiece of Jazz Fusion

Released in 1974, The Jewel in the Lotus was hailed by DownBeat as a “selfless album,” with the review emphasizing the way in which the musicians seamlessly blend their voices, creating an organic and powerful sound. The album’s title itself evokes a sense of purity and mysticism, and the music reflects this ethos with its intricate yet meditative qualities.

Pitchfork recently described The Jewel in the Lotus as “an unsung modernist classic,” and indeed, the album’s ethereal quality and advanced harmonic structures were ahead of their time. The performance is marked by long, introspective passages, punctuated by vibrant solos and complex interactions between the players. Maupin’s reeds and glockenspiel work is mesmerizing, interwoven with Hancock’s inventive piano and electric piano arrangements, which create both a spacious atmosphere and a driving sense of energy. The rhythmic interplay between Waits and Hart adds depth and dimension, with percussionist Bill Summers and trumpeter Charles Sullivan enriching the overall texture.

A Timeless Contribution to Jazz History

While The Jewel in the Lotus was largely overshadowed by some of the more well-known projects of the 1970s, it has gained recognition over time for its uncompromising artistic vision and innovative approach to jazz fusion. Its blend of experimentalism and accessibility makes it a timeless classic that continues to influence musicians and jazz aficionados alike.

The reissue of The Jewel in the Lotus is an essential addition to any jazz collection. Whether you're a lifelong fan of Bennie Maupin or discovering this masterpiece for the first time, the album offers a powerful reminder of the creativity and spirit that defined an era of groundbreaking jazz.

Matthew Muñeses and Riza Printup's "Pag-Ibig Ko Vol. 1": A Beautiful Tribute to Filipino Love Songs

Saxophonist Matthew Muñeses and harpist Riza Printup have teamed up for a captivating new project, Pag-Ibig Ko Vol. 1, set for release on April 4, 2025, through Irabbagast Records. This stunning album takes listeners on an elegantly lyrical journey through Filipino love songs, known as kundiman, capturing the raw emotion and national pride embedded in this traditional music. The album showcases the simple yet profound beauty of Filipino love ballads, with a unique pairing of saxophone and harp that elevates the timeless melodies.

A Journey into the Heart of Filipino Music

Pag-Ibig Ko Vol. 1, which translates to "My Love" in Tagalog, is the follow-up to Muñeses' 2022 album Noli Me Tángere, which explored Filipino heritage through the music inspired by national hero José Rizal. The saxophonist's deep connection to his Filipino roots is central to both albums. While Noli Me Tángere focused on Rizal’s musical influence, Pag-Ibig Ko Vol. 1 expands the exploration into the rich world of kundiman, an art form born from the Philippines' Spanish colonial history. These songs, often written in Tagalog, are direct expressions of love and longing, making them the perfect material for Muñeses and Printup to interpret.

The Power of the Kundiman

As Muñeses reflects, kundiman lyrics are notably different from those in love songs from other cultures. “In kundiman, the lyrics are much more direct,” he says. “They say exactly what they feel: ‘I love you,’ or ‘You’re as beautiful as the moon,’ or ‘You make me feel alive.’ It’s an honesty that immediately drew me in, and I knew they would be beautiful to play with harp.”

Having met Printup nearly a decade ago at a Filipino jazz event in California, Muñeses knew that her deep sensitivity to Filipino music, combined with her exquisite harp playing, would bring a special quality to this collaboration. Printup, who grew up with kundiman and understands the genre’s cultural nuances, was the perfect musical partner for this project.

A Rich Repertoire with Filipino Love Classics

The album features a diverse selection of songs by some of the Philippines' most beloved composers. Two songs from Noli Me Tángere—“Kundiman Ni Rizal” and “Canto de María Clara”—are revisited, alongside kundiman classics such as “Dahil Sa Iyo” by Miguel Velarde Jr. (a song that has been popularized by Nat King Cole and Jerry Vale), as well as compositions by Constancio de Guzman, Ernani Cuenco, Nicanor Abelardo, and Dolores Patero. The album beautifully blends these iconic Filipino love songs with the jazz influence that Muñeses is known for, creating a fresh, emotional interpretation of the kundiman tradition.

The Art of Playing with Harp and Saxophone

The unique combination of harp and saxophone shapes the sound and phrasing throughout the album. Muñeses notes that working with harp was an exciting challenge, as it differs greatly from the typical duo setup with piano. “Harp is a delicate, percussive instrument,” he explains. “The rebound and recoil of the sound made for a much more fluid experience. I’m used to playing intense, driving music, so this felt like the opposite—more serene and reflective.”

This change in approach allowed Muñeses to focus on subtlety and expressiveness, bringing out the emotional depth of the kundiman songs.

A Personal and Patriotic Journey

Both Muñeses and Printup are first-generation Filipino Americans, and their connection to this music is not only artistic but also personal and patriotic. In a time when anti-Asian sentiment has risen in the United States, Muñeses sees this project as a way to celebrate and take pride in his Filipino heritage. “This music represents a unique perspective on what the ‘American dream’ means to those of us who are not native-born,” he reflects.

Encouraged by his mentor, saxophonist Miguel Zenón, Muñeses took on this project as a way of asserting pride in his roots and contributing to the broader conversation on cultural identity through music.

About Matthew Muñeses

Matthew Muñeses is a Chicago-based saxophonist, composer, and educator. With a background in classical violin and saxophone, Muñeses has led bands at renowned venues like Chicago’s Green Mill, Andy’s Jazz Club, and Los Angeles’ Catalina Bar & Grill. His passion for education shines through in his teaching roles at St. Charles North High School and Waubonsee Community College. Muñeses’ debut album, Threshold, and his sophomore release, Noli Me Tángere, have received critical acclaim for their unique blend of jazz and Filipino heritage.

About Riza Printup

Riza Printup is an accomplished harpist, composer, and educator with an extensive career that includes performing with legendary musicians like Kenny Werner, Marcus Printup, and Paquito D’Rivera. She is known for her versatility and unique approach to jazz harp, having performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and contributed to various collaborative projects. Printup’s passion for education extends to her authorship of children’s books and her development of educational programs for young musicians.

Final Thoughts

Pag-Ibig Ko Vol. 1 is a breathtaking fusion of Filipino cultural heritage and modern jazz, a collection of love songs that transcend time and borders. Muñeses and Printup’s heartfelt interpretations breathe new life into the kundiman, inviting listeners to experience the beauty, passion, and emotional depth of Filipino music through the evocative pairing of saxophone and harp.

Hyldon Shines in "Jazz Is Dead 23," a Cosmic Fusion of Brazilian Soul, Jazz, and Funk

Released as part of the Jazz Is Dead series, Jazz Is Dead 23 – Hyldon presents a collaboration that blends Brazilian soul with jazz, funk, and cosmic grooves. Hyldon, a Brazilian soul legend who made waves in the '70s, lends his distinctive vocals to this project, marking an impressive continuation of his artistic journey. The album is a reflection of Hyldon's enduring relevance in the music scene, with a sound that stays true to his roots while experimenting with more complex musical landscapes.

A Unique Fusion of Brazilian Soul and Jazz

Adrian Younge, the renowned composer and producer behind Jazz Is Dead, takes on a major role in the album’s musical direction. Younge’s involvement is crucial, as he provides a rich, atmospheric backdrop with his mastery of various instruments. He plays Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 organ, guitar, and alto saxophone, creating a blend of jazz-funk and soul that perfectly complements Hyldon’s vocal style. Younge's ability to fuse these genres gives the album a dynamic range, from sultry grooves to more introspective moments.

The presence of Ivan Mamao Conti, the legendary drummer from Azymuth, further elevates the album. Conti’s rhythmic contributions bring a signature groove that is unmistakably Brazilian, deepening the album’s rhythmic and textural layers. His beats, a perfect mix of funk and samba, serve as the driving force behind many of the tracks, allowing the fusion of jazz and Brazilian soul to come alive in vivid, intricate ways.

An Homage to Hyldon's Legacy

While Hyldon is most famously known for his classic 1970s Brazilian soul hits, Jazz Is Dead 23 is an expansion of his sound. Unlike the more straightforward soul music of his contemporaries, such as Tim Maia, Hyldon’s approach is far more ambitious. This record channels the complexity and musical depth of other Brazilian giants like Marcos Valle and Arthur Verocai. His songwriting here takes on a refined, layered quality that showcases both his evolution and the depth of his artistic vision.

The titles on the album reflect Hyldon’s nostalgic connection to Brazil, with evocative tracks like “Jenipapo Robo,” “Favela Do Rio De Janeiro,” and “Verao Na California.” These titles not only capture the essence of Brazilian culture but also express a more universal longing, blending social commentary with introspective musings. The atmospheric track “Viajante Do Planeta Azul” (Traveler from the Blue Planet) is a notable example of the album’s more cosmic, spiritual elements, bringing a fresh air of otherworldliness to the traditional Brazilian soul sound.

Track Highlights:

  • Jenipapo Robo: An upbeat, groovy track that blends Hyldon’s soulful vocal delivery with Younge’s dense, atmospheric instrumentation.

  • Favela Do Rio De Janeiro: A gritty, soulful number that highlights Brazil’s vibrant, but often harsh realities, with Conti’s percussion giving the track a driving force.

  • Verao Na California: A mellow track that contrasts the warmth of Brazilian summer with the cool breezes of California, illustrating Hyldon’s ability to blend cultures through music.

  • Um Lugar Legal: A reflective song that creates a lush, intimate atmosphere, showcasing Hyldon’s softer vocal qualities.

  • Viajante Do Planeta Azul: A track that leans into cosmic soul, with intricate instrumental passages creating a celestial feel.

  • O Cacador De Estrelas: A dreamy, atmospheric tune that reflects Hyldon’s visionary approach to songwriting.

Album Formats

In addition to the CD, Jazz Is Dead 23 – Hyldon is available in vinyl formats, including a standard LP  and a limited edition yellow vinyl pressing. These vinyl releases allow collectors and fans of the artist to experience the album in its full analog glory, bringing out the warmth of the soulful and jazzy elements even more effectively.

Kim Waters’ new album, Time 2 Groove, set to release on April 11, 2025, is packed with original compositions and shows off his incredible skills on the alto and soprano saxophones. This is Waters’ first album recorded after the COVID-19 pandemic, marking a return to normalcy for the artist and allowing him the freedom to record and tour without restrictions.

The opening track, The Pacemaker, blends funk and Go-Go music influences with energetic, infectious grooves. Waters recalls his deep-rooted connection to the Go-Go sound, saying, “That Go-Go vibe will never die. There’s something about that groove that makes people move.” The album features collaborations with renowned pianist and producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis, whose work with artists like George Clinton and Maysa brings a distinct flavor to tracks such as Sax You Up and Palm City, the latter evoking the essence of a serene beach getaway.

Emotional Ballads and Heartfelt Tributes

Two standout tracks on Time 2 Groove are deeply personal for Waters. A Pure Heart (For My Mother) is a tender tribute to his mother, Brenda, whose enduring love and wisdom have shaped Waters' life. The soulful, emotional ballad is an outpouring of love and reverence, bringing a tear to the eye with its heartfelt phrasing.

Another standout track, Their Smile (Song For My Twins), celebrates his twin daughters, Kayla and Kimberly. This joyful R&B number highlights the special bond between father and daughters, with Waters expressing how his children have taught him the true meaning of love. “They have brought me so much joy,” he shares, “and have taught me just how important it is to say ‘I love you’ and to listen sincerely.”

The Sound of Love and Legacy

As the album progresses, Waters showcases his versatility with a hypnotic reinvention of The Isley Brothers' classic, I Once Had Your Love (And I Can’t Let Go), and the title track, Time 2 Groove, which carries a signature blend of funk and jazz, reminiscent of the legendary Blackbyrds. The album concludes with Just A Thought, a track where Waters explores improvisation and musical expression, showing off his creative depth and technical prowess.

A Legacy of Chart-Topping Albums

With over two dozen successful albums, including Love’s Melody, From The Heart, and Rhythm and Romance, Kim Waters continues to set the bar for Contemporary Jazz. Time 2 Groove is just the latest addition to his impressive body of work, further solidifying his place as a leader in the genre. Waters hopes his music will inspire the next generation of musicians and keep the genre alive. He praises icons like George Benson and Herbie Hancock for staying relevant and evolving with the times, something he strives to do as well.

A Philosophy of Balance and Self-Belief

Beyond his music, Waters lives a balanced and peaceful life. He credits his ability to stay grounded to his unwavering belief in himself and his philosophy of “it is what it is.” Waters also enjoys the therapeutic nature of landscaping, an outlet that helps him maintain his Zen-like approach to life.

Final Thoughts

As Kim Waters prepares to release Time 2 Groove, he remains a beacon of inspiration, both as an artist and a person. His unrelenting passion for music, his love for his family, and his commitment to evolving while staying true to his roots are the pillars that define his legacy in the world of Contemporary Jazz.

The talented singer/songwriter has already earned significant recognition in her hometown of Buffalo, New York, at the 10th Annual JazzBuffalo Music Greats Poll. DeeAnn was awarded Jazz Female Vocalist of the Year, receiving the most votes for her 2023 album “It’s My Time.” She also earned runner-up honors for Most Memorable Performance and the prestigious John Hunt Jazz Artist of the Year Award.

DeeAnn's "Simply Beautiful" — A Soulful Reimagining of Al Green's Classic

As she rides this wave of success, DeeAnn is preparing to release her much-anticipated single “Simply Beautiful” on April 4th, 2025. This track not only celebrates her growth as an artist but also brings a fresh, sensual twist to Al Green’s iconic 1972 hit from his “I’m Still in Love with You” album. With its deep soul and bluesy undertones, “Simply Beautiful” showcases DeeAnn's vocal mastery and her evolving sound, which marks a dynamic step forward in her musical journey.

“This song embodies everything I’m feeling right now—optimism, beauty, and pure emotion,” DeeAnn shares. "I was immediately drawn to it, especially after working with Ted Perlman, who has become a key part of my musical evolution." Perlman, a renowned producer with a remarkable career spanning over five decades, is behind the production of “Simply Beautiful.” He’s worked with legendary artists such as Burt Bacharach, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and Bob Dylan, bringing his experience and distinctive style to this collaboration.

A Powerhouse Collaboration with Ted Perlman

Working with Perlman has been a transformative experience for DeeAnn. Known for his exceptional work with major artists across genres, Perlman’s unique approach to production and his emotionally charged electric guitar work bring a new depth to DeeAnn's sound. The single was recorded at renowned studios like Highway 70 Sound and Station West in Nashville and Intercoastal Sound in West Palm Beach, Florida. DeeAnn and Perlman were joined by an all-star lineup of musicians, including Jody Nardone on piano/organ, Jonathan Nixon on bass, and Brian Czach on drums, among others.

“The energy in the studio was electric. We nailed ‘Simply Beautiful’ in a single take,” DeeAnn recalls. “The musicians were on fire, and Ted truly understood my voice. He listened to my previous work and crafted something that elevated me to the next level.”

DeeAnn’s Upcoming Album — A Fusion of Genres and Personal Tributes

The release of “Simply Beautiful” is just a preview of what’s to come on DeeAnn’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled album. The album will feature a blend of Straight-ahead Jazz, Smooth Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Neo-Soul, capturing DeeAnn’s unique musical style while showcasing her growth as an artist. The collection will also pay tribute to the three most important people she has lost in recent years: her son, her brother, and her father.

One of the standout tracks on the album is “Sing To Me,” a song DeeAnn co-wrote with Perlman. A perfect reflection of her romantic, hopeful spirit, the track explores themes of love and longing—a recurring theme in DeeAnn’s heartfelt discography.

“My ability to stay hopeful, even after such profound loss, comes from my deep faith in God,” DeeAnn shares. “Music has always been my therapy, and this album is my way of honoring those I've lost, while also celebrating the love I’ve found in the process.”

What’s Next for DeeAnn in 2025

Drummer/Composer Phil Haynes Explores Past and Future in Two Bold New Albums, Reuniting with the Electric Guitar

Return to Electric and Transition(s) to Be Released on April 21, 2025, via Corner Store Jazz

"Since arriving in New York from Oregon in 1983, drummer Phil Haynes established himself as a potent force on the downtown composer/improviser scene.”Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes

For over four decades, Phil Haynes has been at the forefront of jazz, continuously moving forward while exploring new creative horizons. This forward momentum is evident in his two exciting new albums, Return to Electric and Transition(s), set to release on April 21, 2025, via his own Corner Store Jazz label. Both albums feature Haynes’ return to the electric guitar, reconnecting with his roots and musical influences from his early days in New York.

A Return to the Electric Guitar

Haynes’ journey as a drummer and composer has always been driven by exploration, but his latest projects reflect a deeper connection to his musical past. Reuniting with the electric guitar—a sound that shaped his youth—Return to Electric and Transition(s) both take Haynes back to a genre that initially inspired him: fusion and improvised music. These albums capture his distinctive voice while looking to both the past and the future of jazz.

"I marinated in the iconic electric guitar sounds of B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, the British Invasion, and jazz legends like Wes Montgomery and John McLaughlin," Haynes recalls. After moving away from New York over 20 years ago, Haynes felt the loss of collaborating with some of his favorite guitarists. Return to Electric and Transition(s) remedy that gap, reconnecting him with longtime collaborators Steve Salerno and Ben Monder.

Return to Electric: Fusion Classics and Bold Originals

Return to Electric sees Haynes delve into the heart of early fusion music, embracing the experimental spirit of artists like Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Haynes notes, "I was always attracted to the edgy, experimental side of fusion, not its commercial heyday. Recording this album felt like a victory, reclaiming that visceral, full-force energy."

Joined by guitarist Steve Salerno and bassist Drew Gress, Haynes tackles fusion classics alongside original compositions and a set of improvised "Cadenzas" by each member. The album captures the trio’s vibrant, energetic sound, offering a fresh take on familiar pieces while showcasing Haynes’ growth as an artist over decades of playing and composing.

Transition(s): A Long-Awaited Reunion with Ben Monder

Transition(s) marks a long-overdue collaboration between Haynes and guitarist Ben Monder, whom he first worked with during his early days in New York. The two musicians hadn’t recorded together in over 25 years, and Transition(s) is their first meeting on record. The duo revisits the spirit of John Coltrane's "Transition", which was a staple of their jam sessions in the past, while also exploring a range of textures, from atmospheric moods to urgent, lyrical passages. The results are a captivating blend of spontaneity and thoughtfulness.

Haynes reflects on their reunion, "When we played together again, there was an ease to it. We both realized that we’ve been on the right path all along, and now we could see how far we’ve come."

A Tribute to Musical Mentors

Both albums serve as tributes to the musicians who helped shape Haynes’ career. Return to Electric is dedicated to Paul Smoker, the trumpeter who brought together Haynes, Salerno, and Gress. Transition(s) is dedicated to the late Herb Robertson, a close collaborator who passed away in December 2024, just as these projects were nearing completion.

Track Highlights from Return to Electric and Transition(s):

  • “Return to Electric”: A high-energy fusion exploration, featuring Salerno and Gress, blending both classic and original tunes.

  • “Transition(s)”: A sparse, atmospheric track that explores mood and tension, offering a deeply introspective experience.

  • “Cadenzas”: Three improvised solo sections by Haynes, Salerno, and Gress, showcasing their individual voices.

  • “I Fall In Love Too Easily”: A surprising standard that emerges spontaneously during the recording of Transition(s), showing the duo’s fluid creativity.
