Saxophonist and Composer Hillai Govreen to Release New Album "Every Other Now"

Hillai Govreen, a dynamic clarinetist and saxophonist based in New York, is set to release her highly anticipated album Every Other Now on June 20th, 2025. The recording, showcasing Hillai's bold musical vision, features a stellar lineup of musicians including Noah Stoneman (piano, Rhodes), Eden Ladin (piano, synth), Steve Cardenas (guitar), Ben Meigners (bass), Eric McPherson (drums), and Café Da Silva (percussion). Greg Glassman (trumpet) also makes a special appearance on track 8.

This collection of original compositions reflects Hillai’s rich musical journey and her ability to bridge traditional jazz with an innovative, streetwise sound. From the opening notes, listeners will feel the raw energy and deep emotional resonance that defines Hillai's artistry.

About Every Other Now

The album opens with an electrifying intensity, where the musicians' spontaneous improvisations create a visceral connection with the audience. Hillai Govreen explains, "The first time I heard this music performed live, I knew something special was about to happen. The audience recognized it too—they were on the edge of their seats, anticipating the unexpected." This infectious energy and authenticity is central to Every Other Now, a recording that blends passionate, intuitive playing with intricate, detailed musicianship.

In the album, Hillai’s compositions speak to the uncertainty and emotional depth inherent in the artist’s life. She notes, “Uncertainty brings doubts and emotions to the foreground, where it becomes grist for the mill. This music is real—it’s not about being perfectly rational or precise. It’s about being spontaneous, raw, and true to who we are.”

A Unique Approach to Composition

Hillai Govreen believes that composing original works is a deeply personal process. “An original song is like your own child,” she reflects. “You nurture it, shape it, and teach it.” The musicians who contribute to Every Other Now bring their unique voices to each track, resulting in a powerful and memorable listening experience. As Hillai puts it, "Nothing is lost in the pursuit of originality. It’s about the work that comes from research, hard work, and commitment."

About Hillai Govreen

A native of Israel, Hillai Govreen began her musical journey at the age of 6, first learning classical piano before switching to the clarinet at age 12. She attended The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, graduating in 2020 with honors. There, she studied under renowned musicians such as Anat Cohen, Chris Cheek, and Reggie Workman.

Hillai’s career spans several continents, having toured across India, Europe, Israel, and the U.S. She has performed at some of New York's most iconic jazz venues including Dizzy's Club, Smalls, and Birdland. She is also an endorsing artist for P. Mauriat clarinets and saxophones.

Her debut album Allusions (2021), a duet with pianist Nitsan Kolko, showcased Hillai's unique approach to jazz improvisation. The upcoming release Every Other Now marks a significant evolution in her sound, with a band of exceptional musicians and compositions that reflect her growth as an artist and composer.

A New Sound on the Horizon

Every Other Now promises to be a standout release in Hillai Govreen’s already impressive career. The album mixes powerful improvisation with intricate compositions, marking a bold next step in her journey. Fans of adventurous jazz and original compositions won’t want to miss this release.

Kim Waters, a chart-topping saxophonist renowned for his contributions to Contemporary Jazz, has long been a driving force in music. His unmistakable tone, smooth melodies, and masterful fusion of Jazz, R&B, Blues, and Pop have earned him a loyal fanbase and numerous accolades throughout his three-and-a-half-decade career. A Maryland native now based in Georgia, Waters' musical journey has led him to collaborate with icons such as Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Patti LaBelle, and Gerald Albright, among many others.

"Music Brings Us Together" – The Philosophy of Kim Waters

As Kim Waters reflects on his career, he states, “The one thing in the world that people cannot discriminate, argue or bicker about is music. Music brings people together, fosters camaraderie, and is essential for peace, joy, and happiness.” His admiration for the power of music runs deep, and it’s this love that fuels his career, shaping the soundtracks of generations. Waters attributes much of his success to his early influences, which include saxophone legends like Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Stanley Turrentine, and his friend Grover Washington Jr. For him, the saxophone is about romance, beauty, and the purity of melody.

"Time 2 Groove" – The Highly Anticipated New Album

Kim Waters’ new album, Time 2 Groove, set to release on April 11, 2025, is packed with original compositions and shows off his incredible skills on the alto and soprano saxophones. This is Waters’ first album recorded after the COVID-19 pandemic, marking a return to normalcy for the artist and allowing him the freedom to record and tour without restrictions.

The opening track, The Pacemaker, blends funk and Go-Go music influences with energetic, infectious grooves. Waters recalls his deep-rooted connection to the Go-Go sound, saying, “That Go-Go vibe will never die. There’s something about that groove that makes people move.” The album features collaborations with renowned pianist and producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis, whose work with artists like George Clinton and Maysa brings a distinct flavor to tracks such as Sax You Up and Palm City, the latter evoking the essence of a serene beach getaway.

Emotional Ballads and Heartfelt Tributes

Two standout tracks on Time 2 Groove are deeply personal for Waters. A Pure Heart (For My Mother) is a tender tribute to his mother, Brenda, whose enduring love and wisdom have shaped Waters' life. The soulful, emotional ballad is an outpouring of love and reverence, bringing a tear to the eye with its heartfelt phrasing.

Another standout track, Their Smile (Song For My Twins), celebrates his twin daughters, Kayla and Kimberly. This joyful R&B number highlights the special bond between father and daughters, with Waters expressing how his children have taught him the true meaning of love. “They have brought me so much joy,” he shares, “and have taught me just how important it is to say ‘I love you’ and to listen sincerely.”

The Sound of Love and Legacy

As the album progresses, Waters showcases his versatility with a hypnotic reinvention of The Isley Brothers' classic, I Once Had Your Love (And I Can’t Let Go), and the title track, Time 2 Groove, which carries a signature blend of funk and jazz, reminiscent of the legendary Blackbyrds. The album concludes with Just A Thought, a track where Waters explores improvisation and musical expression, showing off his creative depth and technical prowess.

A Legacy of Chart-Topping Albums

With over two dozen successful albums, including Love’s Melody, From The Heart, and Rhythm and Romance, Kim Waters continues to set the bar for Contemporary Jazz. Time 2 Groove is just the latest addition to his impressive body of work, further solidifying his place as a leader in the genre. Waters hopes his music will inspire the next generation of musicians and keep the genre alive. He praises icons like George Benson and Herbie Hancock for staying relevant and evolving with the times, something he strives to do as well.

A Philosophy of Balance and Self-Belief

Beyond his music, Waters lives a balanced and peaceful life. He credits his ability to stay grounded to his unwavering belief in himself and his philosophy of “it is what it is.” Waters also enjoys the therapeutic nature of landscaping, an outlet that helps him maintain his Zen-like approach to life.

Final Thoughts

As Kim Waters prepares to release Time 2 Groove, he remains a beacon of inspiration, both as an artist and a person. His unrelenting passion for music, his love for his family, and his commitment to evolving while staying true to his roots are the pillars that define his legacy in the world of Contemporary Jazz.

“This song embodies everything I’m feeling right now—optimism, beauty, and pure emotion,” DeeAnn shares. "I was immediately drawn to it, especially after working with Ted Perlman, who has become a key part of my musical evolution." Perlman, a renowned producer with a remarkable career spanning over five decades, is behind the production of “Simply Beautiful.” He’s worked with legendary artists such as Burt Bacharach, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and Bob Dylan, bringing his experience and distinctive style to this collaboration.

Drummer/Composer Phil Haynes Explores Past and Future in Two Bold New Albums, Reuniting with the Electric Guitar

Return to Electric and Transition(s) to Be Released on April 21, 2025, via Corner Store Jazz

"Since arriving in New York from Oregon in 1983, drummer Phil Haynes established himself as a potent force on the downtown composer/improviser scene.”Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes

For over four decades, Phil Haynes has been at the forefront of jazz, continuously moving forward while exploring new creative horizons. This forward momentum is evident in his two exciting new albums, Return to Electric and Transition(s), set to release on April 21, 2025, via his own Corner Store Jazz label. Both albums feature Haynes’ return to the electric guitar, reconnecting with his roots and musical influences from his early days in New York.

A Return to the Electric Guitar

Haynes’ journey as a drummer and composer has always been driven by exploration, but his latest projects reflect a deeper connection to his musical past. Reuniting with the electric guitar—a sound that shaped his youth—Return to Electric and Transition(s) both take Haynes back to a genre that initially inspired him: fusion and improvised music. These albums capture his distinctive voice while looking to both the past and the future of jazz.

"I marinated in the iconic electric guitar sounds of B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, the British Invasion, and jazz legends like Wes Montgomery and John McLaughlin," Haynes recalls. After moving away from New York over 20 years ago, Haynes felt the loss of collaborating with some of his favorite guitarists. Return to Electric and Transition(s) remedy that gap, reconnecting him with longtime collaborators Steve Salerno and Ben Monder.

Return to Electric: Fusion Classics and Bold Originals

Return to Electric sees Haynes delve into the heart of early fusion music, embracing the experimental spirit of artists like Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Haynes notes, "I was always attracted to the edgy, experimental side of fusion, not its commercial heyday. Recording this album felt like a victory, reclaiming that visceral, full-force energy."

Joined by guitarist Steve Salerno and bassist Drew Gress, Haynes tackles fusion classics alongside original compositions and a set of improvised "Cadenzas" by each member. The album captures the trio’s vibrant, energetic sound, offering a fresh take on familiar pieces while showcasing Haynes’ growth as an artist over decades of playing and composing.

Transition(s): A Long-Awaited Reunion with Ben Monder

Transition(s) marks a long-overdue collaboration between Haynes and guitarist Ben Monder, whom he first worked with during his early days in New York. The two musicians hadn’t recorded together in over 25 years, and Transition(s) is their first meeting on record. The duo revisits the spirit of John Coltrane's "Transition", which was a staple of their jam sessions in the past, while also exploring a range of textures, from atmospheric moods to urgent, lyrical passages. The results are a captivating blend of spontaneity and thoughtfulness.

Haynes reflects on their reunion, "When we played together again, there was an ease to it. We both realized that we’ve been on the right path all along, and now we could see how far we’ve come."

A Tribute to Musical Mentors

Both albums serve as tributes to the musicians who helped shape Haynes’ career. Return to Electric is dedicated to Paul Smoker, the trumpeter who brought together Haynes, Salerno, and Gress. Transition(s) is dedicated to the late Herb Robertson, a close collaborator who passed away in December 2024, just as these projects were nearing completion.

Track Highlights from Return to Electric and Transition(s):

  • “Return to Electric”: A high-energy fusion exploration, featuring Salerno and Gress, blending both classic and original tunes.

  • “Transition(s)”: A sparse, atmospheric track that explores mood and tension, offering a deeply introspective experience.

  • “Cadenzas”: Three improvised solo sections by Haynes, Salerno, and Gress, showcasing their individual voices.

  • “I Fall In Love Too Easily”: A surprising standard that emerges spontaneously during the recording of Transition(s), showing the duo’s fluid creativity.

Release Information:

  • Album Titles: Return to Electric and Transition(s)

  • Artist: Phil Haynes

  • Release Date: April 21, 2025

  • Label: Corner Store Jazz

  • Catalog Numbers: CSJ 0148 (Transition(s)) / CSJ 0149 (Return to Electric)

Satoko Fujii’s Tokyo Trio to Release First Studio Album Dream a Dream via Libra Records

Highly Anticipated Album Showcases Unique Blend of Composition & Improvisation from Pioneering Jazz Pianist Satoko Fujii

After two successful live recordings, the acclaimed Satoko Fujii Tokyo Trio is set to release their first studio album, Dream a Dream, on March 28, 2025, via Libra Records. This highly anticipated album cements the trio’s place as one of the most innovative piano ensembles in modern jazz, combining improvisation and composition in a way that feels boundaryless and dynamic.

A Bold, Unique Trio Sound

As jazz critic S. Victor Aaron writes, "Satoko Fujii’s Tokyo Trio isn’t even close to being a conventional jazz trio… But it is a Satoko Fujii ensemble in every sense, with the grace, sophistication, surprise, and ingenuity found in every other of her ensembles." With a rare ability to blend structure and spontaneity, the trio creates music that is constantly evolving, surprising, and deeply connected.

Grego Applegate Edwards of Gapplegate Music Review calls the trio’s music “a landmark avant-jazz improv trio,” showcasing Fujii’s distinct voice within the jazz world. The trio's chemistry is evident in their interplay, where each member contributes their voice to create a fluid and intricate sound.

Exploring Composition and Improvisation: Fujii’s Vision

The balance between composition and improvisation lies at the heart of Dream a Dream. Fujii elaborates on her creative approach: “I know improvised music can be exciting, but I like writing notes, too. I like to have these two things together without borders." This unique combination allows the trio to shift seamlessly between composed themes and open-ended improvisation, creating a rich, unpredictable sonic journey.

Fujii continues, “Sometimes I write a lot, but other times I write just a few bars to set the mood. For example, Dream a Dream has a long theme that is very much written, but we improvise and I use parts of the theme to cue a change in feel.” Each track on the album blends these two elements, resulting in a conversation between written and spontaneous music.

The Trio’s Dynamic Performance on Dream a Dream

The tracks on Dream a Dream reflect the trio's growing mastery of this musical synthesis, developed through years of touring and honing their sound. Recorded during the trio’s 2024 European tour, the album captures the essence of their live energy and the seamless integration of composition and improvisation. The music is intricate yet accessible, rich in emotional depth and dynamic range.

Opening track "Second Step" exemplifies the trio’s ability to surprise and engage listeners, beginning with a haunting, unaccompanied piano introduction before transitioning into a collaborative, unpredictable improvisation. The track leads into a rapid-fire drum solo and quirky trio conclusion, showcasing Fujii’s lyrical piano playing and the trio’s tightly-knit synergy.

The title track, "Dream a Dream," moves through contrasting moods, from surreal inside-piano sounds to baroque melodies and rhapsodic conclusions. The piece's evolving structure keeps the listener on their toes, with solos from bassist Sagawa and drummer Takemura highlighting their individual musical voices.

"Summer Day" and "Rain Drop" further emphasize the trio’s nuanced interplay, with staccato notes creating a raindrop-like texture and the music shifting between different combinations of the trio’s instruments. The final track, "Aruku," written during the pandemic, offers a dynamic journey with unexpected stops and contrasts in ensemble balance, commemorating daily walks Fujii took with her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura.

About Satoko Fujii

One of the most original voices in jazz, Satoko Fujii has been pushing the boundaries of improvisation for nearly 30 years. Known for her rumbling intensity and generous restraint, Fujii blends jazz with contemporary classical, rock, and traditional Japanese music, creating a sound that is instantly recognizable. In 2024, Fujii ranked highly in multiple categories in the DownBeat Critics’ Poll, cementing her place as a leading figure in contemporary jazz.

Fujii’s prolific career includes collaborations with notable musicians and ensembles, and she has been recognized for her artistic intelligence with a 2020 Instant Award in Improvised Music. Dream a Dream marks an exciting new chapter in her journey, continuing her exploration of collective improvisation and composition.

Track Highlights from Dream a Dream:

  • “Second Step”: A powerful opening track that transitions from haunting piano to intricate trio improvisation.

  • “Dream a Dream”: A piece that blends composed melodies with surprising and dynamic improvisations.

  • “Summer Day”: A beautiful example of the trio’s collective interplay, featuring lush, spontaneous interactions.

  • “Rain Drop”: A track full of unconventional, flowing rhythms and intricate textures.

  • “Aruku”: A piece inspired by Fujii’s pandemic walks, full of dynamic contrasts and shifting ensemble balance.

A Stellar Lineup and Historic Performance

Featuring a powerhouse lineup, Blue Bossa in the Bronx includes Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Denis Charles on drums. The album kicks off with Dorham’s signature composition, “Blue Bossa,” a tune first recorded on Joe Henderson’s 1963 album Page One. A Tribute to Dorham’s Legacy

In the deluxe two-LP set and CD edition, Grammy-winning jazz writer Bob Blumenthal contributes insightful notes on Dorham’s profound impact on the jazz world. An Underrated Jazz Giant

Blumenthal eloquently writes about Dorham's significance, describing him as “underrated” and “a musician's musician,” highlighting his unique role in the development of modern jazz. Though Dorham often played in the shadows of more charismatic figures like Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, and Miles Davis, he was an indispensable force in jazz, collaborating with the era's greatest talents.

In his reflections, Dan Morgenstern offers a poignant tribute to Dorham’s legacy, praising him as “one of my favorite modern trumpeters” and noting his melodious, thoughtful approach to trumpet playing.

The Influence of Kenny Dorham

Several of today’s top jazz trumpeters offer high praise for Dorham’s impact on their own work:

  • Eddie Henderson recalls, “From Kenny’s first note, you could tell it was him. His sound was distinct—lyrical and unmistakable. He was one of the heavyweights of that generation.”

  • Charles Tolliver remembers, “Kenny crafted a tone and delivery that was inimitable. He was a trumpet hero of mine, and I loved his execution.”

  • Steven Bernstein adds, “Kenny had a unique sound that you could identify from one note. He wasn’t just playing the trumpet; he was shaping the instrument to fit his voice.”

  • Jeremy Pelt reflects, “Kenny Dorham had a knack for melody, with a harmonic sense that was sleek and sophisticated. He played inside the chord, making every note resonate with meaning.”

A Night to Remember

Guitarist Rez Abbasi’s Acoustic Quintet Releases New Album Sound Remains

Sound Remains Marks a New Chapter for Abbasi’s Acoustic Quintet, Featuring Master Percussionist Hasan Bakr

Rez Abbasi, the acclaimed guitarist and 2021 Guggenheim Fellow, continues to push the boundaries of jazz with the release of Sound Remains, his latest album with the Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quintet (RAAQ). Slated for release on June 6, 2025, via Whirlwind Recordings, Sound Remains brings a fresh dynamic to Abbasi’s long-standing ensemble, expanding their sound with the addition of master percussionist Hasan Bakr.

This marks the third album from the Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quintet, following the success of Natural Selection and Intents and Purposes. The new album continues to showcase the synergy between Abbasi, vibraphonist Bill Ware, bassist Stephan Crump, and drummer Eric McPherson, while Bakr’s rich, Gullah-Geechee-inspired percussion adds an exciting new layer to the group's sound.

Acoustic Guitar Brilliance Meets Percussion Innovation

Abbasi, known for his innovative use of the steel-string acoustic guitar in jazz, uses this record to explore the intimate and emotive qualities of the instrument. The album captures Abbasi’s desire to return to his acoustic roots, where every note played on the guitar is accentuated by the organic interplay of the ensemble. Abbasi shares, “I wanted to reconnect with the intimacy of my acoustic group, where all I play is acoustic guitar. The addition of percussion improvisation with the band gave a new edge to my tunes.”

Sound Remains: A Journey of Presence and Mindfulness

Sound Remains is a deeply personal and reflective work, unfolding as a meditation suite that explores themes of presence, mindfulness, and the dissolution of ego-driven attachment. Abbasi, who has found peace and clarity through meditation, says, “When I reach that space, often the only thing that remains is sound.”

The album features a series of intricate compositions, with each track reflecting Abbasi's philosophical exploration of life’s impermanence and the deep emotional connection he shares with his band. Notable tracks include:

  • “Presence”: A rolling 12/8 groove that showcases the interaction between guitar and vibes.

  • “You Are”: A track where Bakr’s percussion propels Abbasi into an incandescent solo.

  • “Folk’s Song”: A beautiful duet between guitar and vibes, serving as a tribute to Abbasi’s late mother, reflecting on the value of life in the face of mortality.

  • “Spin Dream”: A rhythmic metaphor for the circular confusion of life, shifting between groove and swing.

  • “Purity”: A soulful, uplifting track that closes the album with a gospel-like resonance.

The album also features a spontaneous interpretation of John Coltrane’s Lonnie’s Lament, performed on fretless guitar, showcasing the band’s fluid creativity and mutual musical empathy.

A Truly Special Recording

Abbasi speaks highly of his band’s collaborative effort in capturing Sound Remains. “Eric’s use of space complements Hasan’s rhythmic feel beautifully. Bill’s sound on vibes is uniquely his own, and Stephan’s presence on bass is commanding. We captured something truly special on this record.”

Sound Remains will be available in LP, CD, and digital formats, allowing listeners to experience the raw emotion and intricate musical interplay that defines this album.
